Fight For Planet A - Advice & Products Behind The Show

Fight For Planet A沙巴体育平台网址 is a short three-part documentary series airing on ABC Television. The show aims to "empower and motivate Australians to take action on climate change". The first episode kicked off last week, and you can watch in on-demand for free via .

You've probably seen the show's host Craig Reucassel before in War on Waste沙巴体育平台网址 or as part of The Chaser team.

Fight For Planet A - ABC Craig Reucassel

Often these types of shows can leave you feeling overwhelmed. Fight For Planet A is proving to be a little different. Reucassel strikes a good balance between entertaining and informing.

As in his previous show War on Waste, he's pragmatic about the actions we can all take at a personal level. He also provokes discussion about inaction at a business and government level.

Having said that, Fight For Planet A沙巴体育平台网址 is still television, not an implementation manual! Also, the ABC's editorial guidelines mean they prefer not to mention the names of the products featured. As such, I have shared below some of the products and advice that comes up in the show.

Fight For Planet A: Our Climate Challenge

Fight For Planet A spends plenty of time talking about greenhouse gas emissions and climate change. There's no doubt that Craig's favourite prop for the show is his collection of black balloons.

The black balloons are re-inforced in several ways: emissions by the hour, comparing households, comparing countries, etc. They certainly show the sheer scale of our direct contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Even so, the concepts of carbon emissions and climate change remain relatively abstract.

沙巴体育平台网址In this regard, it's useful to refresh your knowledge of how this all works. Say, for example, the relative impact on climate change of electricity generation vs waste disposal. People are obsessed with waste, and this is a good thing, for a number of reasons. But waste is only responsible for about 2% of Australia's emissions.

Causes & Solutions to Climate Change in Australia

In the article above, I have outlined the eight major sources of emissions in Australia. Underneath the most significant contributors, I have also nominated six key actions that everyone can get started with.

Fight For Planet A - Energy Efficiency

I was relieved to see that the show highlights the importance of energy efficiency. I say this because about three-quarters of Australia's carbon emissions come from energy usage in one way or another (see the above article for details).

One of the most engaging scenes from the first episode involved the use of the Powerpal Smart Energy Monitor & App. A household was able to quickly identify their energy-guzzling appliances with the aid of the app. Key culprits were their halogen downlights, air conditioning, and underfloor heating.

Other scenes involved the use of a FLIR One Pro Thermal Imaging Camera. In this case, Craig showed the various insulation gaps and inefficiencies in another household that used central gas heating. Issues identified included a draughty fireplace, gaps in the floorboards, and unsealed wall vents.

If you're interested in delving into your energy usage in more detail, I'd recommend you review these two articles:

1) How To Check, Track & Meter Electricity Usage

This is a good place to start if you're new to the concept of energy monitoring. In summary, I recommend that all households use a power meter and electricity monitor to track their energy consumption.

2) Top 10 Causes of High Electricity Bills

Even if you don't have high power bills, this blog post reveals which appliances use the most energy. Additionally, I outline about 35 specific actions you can take to reduce your energy consumption. I'm sure there are a handful of solutions you have not already implemented.

Fight For Planet A - Planting Trees

沙巴体育平台网址Another highlight from the show was Craig's attempt to 'deliver 20 million trees' to Chevron and Woodside. This made for some entertaining television. But if you're interested in actually planting some trees of your own, I can recommend . They're a not for profit Australian organisation that we have made several donations to over the years.

Tree Delivery

The name Fight For Planet A highlights the fact we have no 'Plan B' or 'Planet B' to move to. Probably not coincidentally, there was a book released in 2019 with the title There's No Planet B by Mike Berners-Lee ().

Reduction Definition

Reduction Revolution was not involved in the creation or production of Fight For Planet A. However, it was pleasing to see so many concepts that are familiar to us exposed to a much wider audience.

I hope you gained a few useful insights from the program. If you need some further energy efficiency inspiration, check out our top selling products or browse our blog posts.
